Spring 2008 EDUC 321 Social Studies in EL

I really liked the book in this class.  It has such great ideas on how to teach social studies. Charlotte Bradshaw was so helpful by giving her many-years-of-experience insight on what it's really like in a classroom. She has so many wonderful stories to tell that will help me as a new teacher. You can tell when you listen to Charlotte that she has a great passion for teaching.  She loves kids. She also loves social studies.  So often this subject is pushed aside because a lot of teachers feel it doesn't measure up to the importance of math and language arts. I believe that social studies is very important for children to learn. Students need to know about our world and the people that did what they did to get to where we are today. Of course, that is only one aspect of social studies.  Students also need to know about geography, economics, government and more. If I teach in an elementary classroom social studies will not take a back burner, so to speak, to the other more "valued" subjects.  It will very much be a part of my classroom as I believe in its place in school.
