Fall 2008 EDUC 362 Teaching Experience I (Pre-Student Teaching)

I was so fortunate to have such a great experience in this pre-student teaching class. I was able to observe at many schools such as Bluffview Elementary, McCoy Elementary, Heights Middle School, Koogler Middle School and Park Avenue Elementary School. I never wanted to teach below 6th or 7th grade; however, after my 8 weeks of observation and student teaching at Park Avenue with Mrs. Saxon's 4th graders, I had a change of heart.  I absolutely loved those 4th graders. It makes me so happy that my horizon, so to speak, has been broadened. This Teaching Experience I class was truly a gift to me because I was so narrow minded before. I was so sure that I only wanted to work at a middle school after I graduated. So, thank you so much to my instructor Alexa Parker for giving this opportunity to me, even though our class only consisted of 3 people.
I wanted to mention that while I was at Park Avenue doing my 2 week pre-student teaching, I took over the subject of Language Arts and Reading. It was a good experience.  For my lesson plans the kids learned about writing poems, writing a fun fictional story using the 4 blocks and the writing process, irregular plural nouns, possesive nouns, context clues, theme, homonyms, reading comprehension and journal writing. It was a little hard at first to jump into someone's classroom and take over where they left off, but I had the cooperating teacher's support. Thanks to her, my time at Park Avenue was a success and a valuable experience.  This class will definitely make me a better teacher.
